Engaging in the exercise of democracy in schools is essential for civic education in order to drive social change both inside and outside the school environment.
Synopsis
It’s student council election season. High school students are organizing for the contest. Four student groups with different opinions and worldviews present proposals, debate campaign strategies, and fight to improve their schools. The conflicts and tensions reveal political differences between the slates, while the harshness of daily reality coexists with the persistence of dreams, friendship, and the right to forge paths toward a world they believe in.

Why learn about this impactful campaign?
The Elecciones impact campaign brought to the big screen many young people alongside an education-focused network. The film became a powerful pedagogical tool to reflect on politics and youth participation. The campaign was conceived as a way to spark adolescents’ interest in politics and cinema through discussions held in student decision-making spaces. It emphasizes the political action of young people within the school environment and challenges the notion that they are disconnected from or uninterested in political organization.
One of the characters in the film says he learned that it’s possible to “play politics,” and that “politics can be cool.” The entire campaign strategy was infused with this spirit. Moreover, the impact campaign materials also serve as a tutorial for educators to foster political debate in schools and encourage the creation of student councils.
