Exposing the violations suffered by Maria Luiza, this is the journey of a woman who defies stereotypes by asserting herself as transgender, a military officer, and a Catholic.

Synopsis

Maria Luiza da Silva is the first transgender woman in the history of the Brazilian Armed Forces. After 22 years of service, she was retired on the grounds of disability. The film investigates the reasons that prevented her from wearing the female uniform, as well as her path of affirmation as a trans woman, military officer, and Catholic.

Why learn about this impactful campaign?

This case study is recommended for impact campaigns seeking to create change and engage in dialogue with conservative institutions. The campaign sparked debate around the violation of trans people’s rights in such institutions, offering visibility to trans individuals in diverse social roles and helping to depathologize trans identities. It is particularly valuable for those aiming to make a direct impact on the lives of their protagonists. In this case, the campaign supported Maria Luiza’s legal battle—she being the first transgender person in the Brazilian Armed Forces—and contributed to a positive outcome in the Brazilian justice system. By highlighting Maria Luiza’s subjectivity as a trans woman, a military officer, a Catholic, a senior, and an enthusiast of cars, planes, and mechanics, the project helped to dismantle stereotypes commonly assigned to trans people. This study is also highly relevant for projects related to LGBTQIA+ themes more broadly.
