Synopsis

What is a government hiding when it buries more than two hundred people without an investigation? In Mexico, mothers and families search for their disappeared loved ones — hoping to see them again in any form, even if it’s only their bodies, even if they have to dig them out of a hidden grave.

Why learn about this impactful campaign?

The #UnearthTheTruth campaign, for the documentaries To See You Again and its prequel Llueve, is a collective effort carried out alongside our protagonists and community: the searcher mothers of Morelos (Mexico), who have become human rights defenders despite the intense violence they face. The campaign had three main goals: to support these collectives in their search and advocacy; to raise awareness about the forensic crisis in Mexico; and to influence the case of the hidden government graves in Jojutla. We used documentary film as a tool to accompany families in their search. The film premiered during the pandemic, and we adapted accordingly. We’ve earned the trust of the searcher movement and built partnerships with grassroots communities, NGOs, and some authorities. A gender perspective has been central to our approach. This campaign can be a valuable reference for other projects working in collaboration with families of the disappeared or addressing other serious human rights violations.
