Are cities built with women in mind? The women who resist and propose new ways of (co)inhabiting public space.

Synopsis

Issues such as lack of lighting, deserted areas, mobility challenges, and the long distances women must travel between home and work are both visible and invisible barriers to women’s access to the city. These problems reveal to what extent cities have been built without a gender perspective, aggravating the violence women face—especially street harassment. Basta de Fiu Fiu unfolds in three narrative layers: the film follows three protagonists from different cities; the women wear eyeglasses with hidden micro-cameras in their daily lives; and it interweaves conversations with experts and men about harassment, bodies, and masculinities.

Why learn about this impactful campaign?

The Basta de Fiu Fiu campaign is of special interest to individuals and organizations aiming to raise awareness, drive social change, and influence public policy. The documentary was backed by 1,200 people through crowdfunding and screened at 16 festivals across 9 countries, as well as in 159 municipalities in Brazil. Its distribution plan included major festivals, public talks, and screenings at prestigious institutions—universities, schools, the Brazilian National Congress, various UN agencies in Brazil, and top judicial bodies such as the Superior Court of Justice. During its release year, the film served as a tool for lobbying Congress to approve the Sexual Harassment Law, which addresses the issue tackled in the documentary. It was also adopted by thousands of women’s and girls’ collectives to host community screenings, facilitate local dialogues, and amplify the issue across social media platforms.
